Current moon phase, illumination percentage and a rolling 30-day lunar calendar. Uses the Julian-day algorithm for astronomical accuracy.

How it works

The lunar cycle is 29.53 days. We compute days since a known new moon (e.g. 2000-01-06) and take the fractional cycle. Values map to standard phases (New, Waxing Crescent, First Quarter, Waxing Gibbous, Full, Waning Gibbous, Last Quarter, Waning Crescent).

Key features

  • Current phase with emoji
  • Illumination percentage
  • 30-day calendar around today
  • No dependencies on external APIs

Common use cases

Photography
Full moon nights are landscape-photographer gold.
Fishing & hunting
Lunar phase influences animal behaviour.
Gardening
Some biodynamic practices align planting with moon phases.

Pro tips

  • โ—†Full moon rises at sunset โ€” great for time-lapse shots.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • โœ•Assuming "full moon" is a single day โ€” it's technically an instant, but appears full for about 3 days.
