Studies consistently place the average human visual reaction time at around 250 milliseconds โ roughly a quarter of a second. World-class athletes, esports players and fighter pilots typically clock in between 170 and 200 ms. Below 150 ms is exceptional; below 100 ms is almost certainly measurement error (or an early guess).
What are you actually measuring?
A reaction time test measures a chain: photons hit your retina โ signal travels to visual cortex โ decision is made โ motor command is issued โ finger presses button. There's a hard biological floor around 100 ms that no amount of practice will break.
Ways to improve
- Sleep. A single night of poor sleep can slow reaction time by 30โ50 ms.
- Caffeine. Roughly a 20 ms improvement, peaking about 45 minutes after intake.
- Practice. Familiarity with the stimulus and motor pattern matters more than raw neuron speed.
- Warm up. Your first attempt is almost always your worst โ always take 3 to 5 test runs before recording a personal best.
